TORONTO, ONTARIO -- As a result of reports from the FDA and various media outlets that some recalled lots of "cuts and gravy" style wet pet food remain on store shelves, Menu Foods has asked all retail outlets to immediately remove all impacted varieties of wet pet food posted at www.menufoods.com, regardless of the date code. Menu Foods remains concerned that consumers are able to purchase recalled items. The recall is limited to “cuts and gravy” style pet food in cans and foil pouches produced on specific dates and times between December 3, 2006, and March 6, 2007 in two of Menu’s plants. The recall affects 42 brands of cat food and 53 brands of dog food. There is no known risk from items not listed on the recall list but an abundance of caution is called for in this situation. FDA has been apprised of this action. The recall of certain brands of ‘wet pet food’ has been in the news since Mar. 16, and since then there has been more information then most pet owners can digest. Menu Foods Income Fund announced on Mar. 16 the precautionary recall of a portion of the dog and cat food it manufactured between Dec. 3, 2006, and Mar. 6, 2007. The recall is limited to “cuts and gravy” style pet food in cans and pouches manufactured at two of the Fund’s United States facilities. These products are both manufactured and sold under private-label and are contract-manufactured for some national brands. Menu is the leading North American private-label/contract manufacturer of wet pet food products sold by supermarket retailers, mass merchandisers, pet specialty retailers and other retail and wholesale outlets. Menu produced more than one billion containers in 2006. In brief, the company has recalled 42 brands of canned or soft food in pouches cat food, as well as 53 brands of canned dog food. The recall resulted after several cats and dogs became ill after eating the product. The death of some pets has also been reported. Two cats are currently under veterinary care in Kamloops for renal failure that reports say could be linked to injesting tainted pet food. As of press time last week the company had reported rodent poison as the suspected contaminant in the pet food. There are numerous sites that provide information, but going directly to the source of the pet food recall causes the least confusion. In order to determine whether cat and dog food in their possession is subject to recall, consumers should refer to the list of brand names (listed products) at www.menufoods.com/recall or call 1-866-895-2708. Concerned pet owners are best advised to immediately contact their veterinarian should they observe any symptoms of possible renal failure (kidney problems) in their pets which include loss of appetite, vomiting, lethargy, drinking lots of water or not drinking at all, rancid breath and sores in the mouth. All cat and dog owners are advised to not feed canned or pouch pet food to their animals until they have confirmed the brand name and dates on the cans are not part of the recall. |
