Responsible Pet Care
Responsible pet ownership is easy! Your pet relies on you to provide food, shelter and loving care. The Humane Society of the United States in Washington recommends the following actions to ensure your pet?s needs are met:
- License your pet according to local laws and have the pet wear an ID tag at all times to show name, address, and phone number.
- Make your pet an indoor pet. The pet should live inside with the rest of the family.
- Keep your pet on a leash or under control when you take the pet outside for exercise. This also protects the pet from injuries caused by cars, other animals, disease, and theft.
- Spay or neuter your pet. This will keep them healthier and reduce the problem of overpopulation.
- Provide the pet a nutritious diet, including constant clean water.
- Provide the pet with plenty of exercise.
- Train your pet patiently and give them lots of love and attention.
- Be sure your pet receives proper veterinary care, and keep up with necessary vaccinations, including rabies, to protect your pet.
- Groom your pet to keep their coat healthy, soft, and shiny. It is a good way to bond with them too!
- Have realistic expectations about your pet. Nobody is perfect. Make the commitment to work through the behavior of health problems as they may arise. Don?t just get rid of the pet!
In return you will receive warm and loving companionship for years to come.
